Endless Construction

As I walked to the school this afternoon, I witnessed more contsruction. It looks like they are changing the drainage system around the intersection by our home. They are putting pipes in by the sidwalk where the monitor lizard lives. I'm thinking he may move on to greener, quieter pastures. I discovered the monitor lizard about 2 months ago. He almost got hit by a car that day. He's about 2 feet long and made several holes going under the sidewalk that goes to ICS. But I haven't seen him for quite a while, and I think he will move on. Sorry Mom!!

Sad Day

We had a couple of very sad days at the RDA last week. One of the horses stopped eating and drinking last Thursday. He had to be put down on Friday. His name was Kublai and he was only 13 years old. The stable master thought he must have hit his head in the stall and the blow affected his brain. He simply lost control over his body slowly over time. I said goodbye to him on Thursday before I left. Friday morning he fell down and never got back up. We had sessions to do so some of the staff put a tarp up to cover his stall. The children never even knew what was going on. Later I asked one of the staff how she was doing. Her response was, "The worst is over." That was how I felt. At least he wasn't suffering anymore. Please pray as I seek to minister to the people who care for the horses. They were the most affected.

RAIN!!!!!

The big topic for today is the weather. A couple of days ago we experienced the most amazing storm ever! It got almost twighlight dark, rained a waterfall in wind, and lightning and thunder flashed and sounded simultaniously and constantly. Even these words don't do it justice. I couldn't even see across the road from our apartment. So, I pulled up a chair and enjoyed the show. I had to reset our breaker twice because of lightning strikes.

Meanwhile, after the worst of the lightening and thunder passed, Danny made his way home. I'd been noticing traffic backed up infront of our place. I just assumed the lightening cut power to the traffic lights. But that was not the case. When Danny got home he was wet to his knees. Most of the hard rain was gone so I was puzzled. He said that one or more drains were clogged at the intersection that he must cross to get home. There was a lake about a foot deep covering the entire intersection. The traffic I saw was backed up because each car had to proceed through the lake slow enough to prevent stalling the engine. Danny had to wade home. I imagine he looked a bit like Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain. How bizarre!! He also said that the rain canal nearby, that is usually almost empty, was almost full (about 5 feet deep). It is nice to know those things really are deep and wide for a reason.

We also experienced a similar storm again today. It broke after I got to school to tutor and had worn itself out by the time we were ready to leave. And thankfully no lake to wade in. We did have to reset the breaker when we got home. But we avoided wetness.

Building Update

There were only two bids received and we were the highest of the two bids. The government does not have to accept our bid and can take up to 90 days to decide. Thank you all for your prayers. Please be praying as we wait for God's will. Obviously the best scenerio in our minds is that we win the bid and are told soon. Also, if God gives us this new location, our current enrollment will be too small to support it. Pray for an influx of new students. The school is taking a leap of faith with this new site. Always, we want God's will first!

A Quiet Home

Well, Susie left for home Thursday morning bright and early (6:00 am). It was a wonderful time having her here to visit and we enjoyed being able to see Singapore through new eyes. Dad called to let us know that she made it home alright. Thanks for all your prayers. I must say it has been a little strange to have our guest room empty. Friday morning I woke up and thought to myself, "Well, time to wake Mom up." Then it hit me. Mom is gone. Thanks for coming; we had so much fun!!

One of the great features of this campus is this large field. This used to be a local school, but has been unused for the past year. There would be enough room for 2-3 times as many students as we can hold at the current time!

A week in Singapore

OK, well, Monday #2 in our new weekly update schedule.

This past week has been a busy one. Having Mom here makes for extra activities as we try to show her around. Really it is the weekend where the business really stands out. Saturday we had a carnival/book fair at the school and spent most of the afternoon and evening there. The event was to raise funds for the library, the senior class trip, and the Asia mission team. It was a fun time with carnival games and food and books, and a dunking booth! I even got a 20 minute session in the dunking booth. It was something I would never look to do, but it was fun, and I would do it again. Pictures will be included later.

Sunday was church and Sentosa for volleyball again. While on Sentosa we took Mom on the monorail around the island. The monorail closes its doors on Tuesday to make room for a new and improved train system which will be much more efficient, but not as scenic. I think it will be a good thing, but we were glad to have one last trip on the monorail! We also got to go to the island via the cable cars this week. The view from up there is just magnificent! And mom even made it up the 130+ stairs, and back down as well!

All in all a good week, but we are looking forward to Spring Break next week. I can't believe that the third quarter ends on Friday!

I, Betsy, have added Thursday afternoons to my RDA time. One of the instructors, Bee, asked me to assist her with some students that are much more capable riders in the afternoons. There are 3 riders. I'm in charge of teaching the two beginners. I forgot to put my name tag on this week. I only had one student because the other was sick. The student asked me to repeat my name because he couldn't remember it. I told him, "It's Betsy." He said, "I don't think I'll remember that name, so I'll just call you Mickey. You're Mickey okay?" I chucked inside and agreed that would be fine. During the entire ride he called me Mickey. I actually remembered to respond accordingly. Just wanted to include this humerous tale for you! As a prayer request, while I was teaching my student, Mom got to talk with his teacher. She is a Muslim and Mom had her undivided attention for the entire hour-long lesson. Please pray that God will open her eyes to His truth!

Harley

Mom got to come with me, Betsy, to the RDA on Thursday. She got a picture of me with one of my favorite horses, Harley. I get to lead him on Thursdays. He is a retired thoroughbred racehorse. That means that he reminds me a lot of the horse I used to own, Flight. He is a sweet horse with a willing spirit.

Assistant Instructor

I was asked by one of the instructors at RDA if I would be willing to be an Assistant Instructor (AI) for the month of March. I said I'd be willing to take on the extra responibility for them. This last Thursday I still lead Harley for one hour and assisted for the other hour. You can see me here helping one of the students go to his horse, Django. I helped each rider mount, helped teach the warm-up exercises, helped with crowd control in the arena, and got to help some of the students with their trotting. I enjoyed the morning very much!

The carnival had a piratey theme, so Mom and Betsy had fun dressing me up as a pirate. They wanted to put a tea bag over my eye for a patch, but I told them I wasn't going to have tea dripping down my face from the sweat!

Water has never been my favorite thing, and the idea of being dunked wasn't exciting to me, but I've been working on it lately, and really had a lot of fun. I don't think I had quite as much fun as Mom did though! The water actually felt really nice after I got used to the process. And I did get used to the process, I had a lot of practice!

New Eyes

It has been fun these past couple of days having Susie (Betsy's mom) here to visit. We are again seeing Singapore through the eyes of a newcomer! As such, we will probably have more things to share in the next month. Things that have become commonplace to us will be new to her and she will remind us to tell you about them!

Yesterday we took her for her first real adventure, trying to break her in quickly! We started with a 8 minute walk to the bus stop followed with a 45 minute bus ride to church. After church it was a 35 minute bus ride and a 20 minute walk to lunch with some friends from school (we had Mexican!). Then we walked 8 minutes to the MRT for a 15 minute subway ride. Another 5 minute walk brought us to Starbuck's. Then we shared a Taxi with Miriam which dropped us at the bottom of the stairs of death (75+ steps) to return home. Once we got home we changed and got ready to go to the beach. That was a 15 minute walk to the bus stop, a 3 minute bus ride to the island of Sentosa, a transfer to another bus for a 6 minute ride. Once at the beach we met a bunch more friends for volleyball. We were there for a few hours, then we took a 6 minute bus ride to watch the fountain/music and light show. That got over at about 8:10 and we walked a couple minutes to the next bus for a 5 minute ride (in a PACKED bus) to the transfer spot for leaving the island and returning home. Once we got to the departure bus stand we decided to sit and wait a while instead of standing in the huge line. After 6 full busloads of people left we decided to get in line for the 6 minute bus ride back to the mainland. Then a final 15 minute walk brought us home! Showers and bed!

Baseball Season

Well, the long awaited time has returned. Baseball is back! In case you didn't know March 2nd holds the first spring training game of the season, and MLB.com is broadcasting it for free. I'm excited to be up waiting for it to come on. The Washington Nationals playing the New York Mets. Ah, what a wonderful pasttime.

Oh, in case you are wondering, yes, it is 2 in the morning here. I went to sleep at about 7:30 this evening so I could get up early to watch the game. I'm going to grade some papers during the game, then go to bed and sleep a couple more hours before getting up for school!

Rain is back

Well, raining again today. It has been fairly dry lately, but the last couple of days we've had the rain and thunderstorms. Saturday morning Betsy woke up to a HUGE thunderclap. Today, walking home from school, my umbrella kept my top half dry, but my pants were drenched all the way up to my thighs! When it rains, it RAINS!!!

Other things are going well. Looking forward to Betsy's mom arriving this coming Saturday morning. Hopefully it won't rain too much while she is here!

A high flying birthday

This week we had a great time celebrating Betsy's birthday. At the top of Mt. Faber (where we live) there is a cable car station that transports people to Sentosa. They have an interesting feature called Sky Dining. We got on the cable cars at about 6:30 and ate dinner! It was three courses which were served each time we returned to Mt. Faber. We ended up making four laps in the cars over the course of about 2.5 hours. It was beautiful scenery!! Pictures coming!

A new year!!

OK, so it has been way too long, I would like to be able to blame it on being busy, and I have been busy, but I still could have taken the time to make a post. . .

Well, how to some up one month of time without taking the pages, here goes:

The year started out with us going to a fellow teacher's home for New Year's dinner. We had fondue, an old family tradition, with some new twisted in. . . potatoes for the cheese dip, and asian fruits for the chocolate. Very yummy!

School started up again on the 10th of January and after 3 weeks of vacation it took a little while to get back in the groove of school. I think I have made it now!

I had almost gotten in the groove until the 20th of January when our school had a Lock-In at the school and I got to chaperone. . . Yes, GOT TO! I love staying up late, and this gave me a great excuse to stay up all night! It was a fun time, but the three day weekend that we got that weekend was all used up for rest!

Then early last week I was asked if I could be a small group leader for a weekend retreat called "Discipleship Now" put on by one of the larger international churches. I agreed. It was a fun weekend, starting on Friday evening I went to the gathering, then I went with my seven 14-15 year old boys to the home of one of the church goers, where the 8 of us would be staying and having bible studies. It was a very nice home, we had fun, but of course stayed up late and got less sleep than we should have!

I got home from that weekend on Sunday afternoon, and have been slowly catching up on my sleep. I look forward to this weekend in which we have no plans, and then even more I look forward to Chinese New Year next week and a 5 day weekend!


On the spiritual side of things, the busy-ness of the past weeks have forced us to rely more and more on Christ. I have been reading through Psalms in my daily devotions, and have multiple times pulled out my Bible to read encouragement to both of us.

Well, about time to get back to work here, love you all, and again, sorry for the delay in the update!

Earthquake

I just wanted to put up a quick note to assure you all that we are fine. The earthquake was approximately 573 miles away from us, and we felt nothing. Singapore is also very protected from tsunamis by the surrounding Indonesian islands. As I understand it, Singapore is one of the safest places in the world with regard to natural disasters. No earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes, flooding, etc.

We've had a wonderful Christmas season so far, and will update you a little more later, but I wanted to reassure you as soon as I heard about this! (I actually didn't even hear about the earthquake until this morning (Monday).

In early November we had a five-day weekend and were able to go to Sibu, Malaysia to relax and escape the fast pace of city life. We went with two other couples from the school. (Bob is sitting by Betsy.)

During the actual ride there are three volunteers per horse, one leading (this is what Betsy does) and two making sure the rider is stable and not going to fall off. There are also two or three instructors for the whole group.

Good evening to you! Thanksgiving was good here, we had a good time of food, fellowship, and games at the Bailey's house (friends from church) they also had our Singaporean pastors over. We got to watch a recorded Monday night football game (Patriots vs. Chiefs), Bible Trivia, and Hoopla! We got home rather late.

Then on Saturday we had basketball games to play. The girls won the consolation championship (3rd place). While both of the guys teams lost the championship games and got second. We played well, but were simply up against a better team (especially the older boys). The younger team made a couple of runs that brought us within 1 or 2 points, but would follow it up by letting UWC score 6 or 7 to pull ahead again. It was fun though!

On Sunday I went to a chess tournament to watch one of my students. 2 or 3 years ago he won the Singapore National Chess Title. It was incredible to watch this caliber of play. There were 2 grand masters, an olympean, as well as Ino and a bunch of other really good players! It was incredible how fast their minds worked. This was especially evident when they would analyze the games after completing them! Ino ended up getting 3rd place. Ino has been a great asset to have at chess club each week!

Wow, the last day of November! I can't believe Christmas is almost here! We end the semester before Christmas, so we have two weeks of normal school, than a week of exams. Pray for me as I finish up different subjects before the break.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I can't believe it is already Thanksgiving! This past month has just flown by!

Two weeks ago we had a five-day weekend and were able to spend some time with fellow teachers in Malaysia. It was a much needed rest as the first days off since the year started.

The past couple of weeks have been full of basketball! Both the U16 and the Open teams have been finishing regular seasons, and then having playoff games. Last week the U16 team won the semi-final match to qualify for the finals this coming Saturday. Monday the Open boys played a tough Quarterfinal game and won with four points in the last 10 seconds. The semi-finals were scheduled for Tuesday, but the game was rained out! So we found a place that we could use a gym and played Wednesday. It was another close game, and this time we won on a jump shot with 2 seconds on the clock! So, both of the boys teams will be playing in the finals on Saturday, and the Girls team will be playing in the Consolation Championship. So Saturday will be another full basketball day. But, then the season is over, and there will be a little more free time!

It is hard to think of this as Thanksgiving, not only is it warm out, but it isn't a holiday here. Everyone is working like normal. But I do have the day off! This morning I went with Betsy to the RDA to watch her work with the horses and the kids. I took a few pictures and will post some later.

This evening we will be going to some friends from church to celebrate Thanksgiving. He recorded some football games, so we'll watch football and eat turkey and pumpkin pie! It won't be the Thanksgiving we are used to, but it will be fun. We will definitely be missing our family though.

Please be praying for us in this holiday season as we are spending this time away from family. Most times it isn't too bad, but occasionally it hits us.

Raining in Singapore

Well, the rainy season has arrived. For the past few days there have been around two hours of pouring rain, thunder, and lightning. Early this week as I was leaving school I got to the exit from the school to find a small pond, about 20 feet across, and as deep as 5 inches. I didn't want to go all the way back to the other side of the campus, so I took off my shoes and socks, rolled up my pants and waded across. It is nice to have a warm rain and be able to do that.

Bush for 4 more years!

It has been a crazy week here. Betsy and I have been tracking the race by listening to Rush Limbaugh online in the evenings. We actually sent our ballots in a couple of weeks ago, so it was just a matter of watching what would happen. It was weird not being able to see any results til Wednesday morning, but it also meant I didn't have to stay up late to see the results! By Wednesday night when we went to bed, it wasn't official. But this morning the first place I went was the news page and saw the great headline of Kerry's concession! We continue to pray that God will be working in President Bush and in our great country!

OK, here they are, some more pictures for you all! The first couple are from our International Night, a great time of food and fun! All the families were to bring two dishes from their home culture. There was food from EVERYWHERE! America, Italy, Sweden, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, etc! It was great, we love to eat and try new things. I couldn't believe how many people were there for this thing. It is really a pretty large community of people when you get all the parents and students and staff together.

After the food, we had a show with performances dealing with different areas of the world, I have pictures from a couple of our favorites included. More about them later.

Yesterday we went to Sentosa island with our small group from school. We played some MiniGolf, and hung out at the beach, it was a beautiful day! We hadn't been to Sentosa yet, but it is only a ten minute walk away from our house. We will be going often!

The program started out with a tribute to America's great pasttime with "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" I loved joining in the second time!

As a side note, we had a couple of great series this year. Was great to see the Yanks blow the lead! (Sorry Grandma, couldn't resist one more jab!)

The show ended with a group of Korean students doing a drumming concert, they drummed on the tables, and on overturned garbage cans! It was a great performance, and it was neat to see these normally quiet students get out in front and show off their culture!

This is Andrew, the Computer guy at ICS. I'm enjoying having him around to do all the computer things so I don't have to and teaching me some things I don't know yet, and he enjoys (I think) having me around to help occasionally.

The Southernmost point in Continental Asia

We find it interesting that this little island is considered the southernmost point in continental Asia. It is connected to the island of Sentosa by a bridge, which is connected to Singapore by a bridge, which is connected to Malaysia and mainland Asia by a bridge!

The beach was a beautiful place with a bunch of room to run and play, and plenty of sand to share! There was a group of kids there that dug a hole about 7 feet deep in the sand! And I was able to play frisbee with a couple others from the school. It was fun to be able to really throw the disc full power, though my arm was sore by the end!

We ended our time in Sentosa by going to a laser and fountain show, it was pretty cool. The whole island was lit up with lights. A fun time!

Quarter One Complete

Well, last Friday ended the first quarter of school. On Wednesday I finished turning in grades for the quarter. I can't belive the time has gone so quickly! My students did fairly well, with only a few Ds and no Fs!

These last couple days have been great as God has been working on me to better use my time. I have been able to keep up with my grading and not have a ton of work to do here at home. As a result, yesterday Betsy and I were able to go on a date!

It was exciting! We went to one of the malls and a Mail Boxes Etc. store where we were able to turn in our ballots for the election. UPS and FedEx provide free mailing of ballots back to the states! It was wonderful to be able to cast our vote from so far away and to feel comfortable that it will actually make it on time!

After dropping off our ballots we wandered the mall for a while, then went to the Pizza Hut for dinner. As we were heading home from dinner we passed by the World's Largest Fountain and a sign that said there were daily shows from 8-10 pm so we decided to wait the half hour to see the show! Unfortunately as we sat there we saw scaffolding and figured it wasn't going to be down in time for a show, but we were enjoying just relaxing from the hustle and bustle of the day and waited anyway. At 8 we heard an announcement telling everyone that there would be no show for a couple of weeks while they were doing repairs. I guess we'll have to go back later!

So, we decided to go home. That was an ordeal! We knew where we needed to go to get a bus, but we couldn't get out of the mall in that direction! And as we tried to walk around the outside we ran into construction blocking the sidewalks! Eventually we ended up a half mile away (we tried to cut through a building and ended up in an underground mall) at a mall Betsy recognized and knew where to go to get a bus. It was an adventure!

All in all a great evening, seeing God's blessings!

Day 2 of consistency!

Tuesday night we were invited to go to the Young Life fundraising banquet with one of Betsy's friends from Bible Study (and the mother of one of my students). It was a great time and it was neat to learn something about this great organization. Pray for wisdom as we consider our involvement.

Last weekend we went with Stephen & Rachel to a park behind their house and were able to play a round of disc golf for the first time since moving here. (Disc golf is like frisbee golf, and a hobby that both of us have been enjoying for the last couple of years.) There are no official courses here like in the states, but we can still just pick a tree here, a sign there, the light post, picnic table, etc. It was great to be throwing our discs again!! And it was great to be out in the greenery!

Wow, where has the time gone?

OK, it has been a couple weeks now, and much has happened. First of all, I'm sorry I haven't sent anything out in the last weeks. Hopefully I will do better now, I'm trying to make this part of my morning routine.

The past two weeks have been pretty good. Though the first part of October both of us were sick. I was still able to go to school, but had a pretty tough day. Then during the weekend was able to recover.

Basketball season has continued and both our younger team and our older team have won their games. We are looking forward to continuing to win and to being about to play in the tournament at the end of the year. Last night the older boys beat the Australian International School for the first time in ICS history!

It is hard to believe, but tomorrow is already the end of the first quarter! Nine weeks of school have already passed! Please pray for me to be diligent in my grading these next few days and to be prepared to turn in grades next Wednesday.
